It is measured in degrees Kelvin. The higher the color temperature, the cooler or more blue the effect of the light. Natural sunlight is the point of comparison. The Northern Sky produces a cool blue light which would replicate 8,000 degrees kelvin. An Overcast Sky produces a bluish light which would replicate 6,500-7,000 degrees kelvin. Sunlight At Noon!! is the whitest light with a kelvin temperature of 5,500 degrees. Candle Light has a soft yellow light. This is the warmest light of 2,000 degrees kelvin. The further you get away from 5,500K in either direction, the further you get away from "full spectrum" lighting. Incandescent = 2700K Halogen = 3000K Warm White Fluorescent = 2700K Cool White Fluorescent = 4100K "Halco" Natural White = 5000K The Truth About It To make an incandescent bulb full spectrum, the light that it produces passes through a filter of neodymium glass(in the cheaper bulbs, just a coating), which enhances the light and brings it as close to natural sunlight as an incandescent bulb can get. If the bulb doesn't have the familiar bluish/purplish neodymium glass shell, it is NOT a full spectrum incandescent bulb. Period. The fluorescent produces light based on the phosphurs inside the bulb and needs no filter. Fluorescent full spectrum is always better than incandescent and should be your first choice. If you have to, or prefer to use incandescent, then the full spectrum bulbs like my Halco's are the best you can buy. Fluorescents are much more energy efficient, and they last twice as long as my "long life" incandescents. A lot of people advertise full spectrum fluorescent bulbs as being a treatment for depression (S.A.D.--seasonal affective disorder). A fluorescent can't even think about being helpful to S.A.D. unless it has a color temperature of 5500K - 5600K(not 5000K, not 6500K), and a C.R.I. of at least 90. CRI means Color Rendering Index. It is a measurement of light equivalency, 0 being darkness and 100 being direct sunlight. When it meets those criteria, it then becomes the most optimal full spectrum bulb available. So, while my Halco full spectrum Natural White 5000K fluorescent makes a great reading lamp and an outstanding source of beautiful natural white lighting, it is not at all helpful nor should it be used as, a treatment for those people who suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. Having said that, is it then fair to say that a person suffering from S.A.D. would derive a greater(or any) benefit, or feel at all better as a result of constant exposure to these bulbs, compared to being exposed to a standard cool or warm white fluorescent, or any type of incandescent or halogen? Probably, but don't buy these bulbs as a treatment or cure for S.A.D. These incredibly fantastic Halco fluorescents are much closer to the color spectrum configuration of natural sunlight, than a regular standard cool white fluorescent. As a result, glare is minimized, colors are brighter and truer, and eye strain is greatly reduced. To sum it up, a fluorescent full spectrum bulb is better than an incandescent full spectrum bulb. When it comes to full spectrum fluorescents, you should always know and strongly consider the C.R.I. and Kelvin ratings of the bulb! A color temperature of 5500K-5600K and a C.R.I of 90 or higher, is as close to natural sunlight as you can possibly get. If you want to treat depression, listen to your doctor.
