Description
SOLID MAHOGANY FULLY FUNCTIONAL PURPLE MARTIN BIRDHOUSE WITH EIGHT NESTING ROOMS Up for bid is this great custom hand made mahogany birdhouse. This is a large birdhouse being 17” wide and 31” tall including the finial. Being both a cabinet maker and a birdlover, I designed this birdhouse with purple martins in mind, however it will be more than adequate for many other types of birds. Purple Martins are my favorite, they are beautiful birds, acrobatic fliers and they do a number on the bugs (great for helping to control mosquitos). It is best to have your Purple Martin house up by the months of Janruary to June depending on your location. Everything about this house is functional keeping in mind not only the birds but the longevity of the house and therefor the landlord. Key Features of the house: The outer shell, perches, and pole brackets are all solid mahogany which not only has a beautiful appearance but is rot resistant with no chemical treatment. The pole brackets are designed to fit a 4x4 pole. This is the same type of mahogany that is used for outside decks. The roof is covered with approx. 136 cedar shakes. The shakes are both weatherproof themselves and they are applied in the correct fashion to prevent any leakage between them. Roof is topped with a copper hexagon which I personally bend and solder together. This copper may be some of my old stock which already has a nice patina. This top acts as a vent to allow excess heat to escape so the birds don’t get too hot during the summer months. Very easy to clean and observe the birds. Simply remove the brass pins and the outer shell slides down the pole. This way you do not actually move the birds or the nest. All eight sides of both the roof and outer shell are joined using biscuts and Titebond III glue which will prevent them from ever coming apart. Some purple martin lovers prefer to leave their birdhouse out for the winter but you should close the holes to prevent other birds (sparrows and starlings) from taking over the house. With my system you can remove the pins rotate the outer shell one eighth of a turn and reinsert the pins to close the hole. Key features for the birds: Each of the eight rooms is approx. 6 x 6 x 7” tall with a 2” hole 1.75” above the floor. Overhanging roof helps to prevent the rain from going into the hole. Any rain that may blow inside the hole will drain out the bottom. Larger perches smaller than a porch but larger than a normal perch. I like the perches because they give me more time to observe the birds, however some people feel that they attract predators. If you don’t want the perches I will deduct $20 from the buy it now price. Condition:NEW FRESH OUT OF MY WORKSHOP TAKE A LOOK AT MY WEBSITE AT WWW.BERKSHIREWOODWORKS.COMInsurance is optional (not responsible for uninsured items). Guaranteed to be as described!
