Description
Jessie M King's colour illustrations for A Carol: Good King Wenceslas (1920) A set of 14 blank Greeting Cards showing the suite of colour illustrations for this very rare vintage book - perfect for Christmas The current offering is for a set of 14 blank Greeting Cards showing the entire suite of colour illustrations produced by Jessie M King for A Carol: Good King Wenceslas. The classic Christmas carol, Good King Wenceslas, is brought to life in wonderful illustrations by Jessie M King in this lovely low volume printing published in, or about, 1920. 1st Edition copies of A Carol: Good King Wenceslas are extraordinarily rare and thus, expensive - when they are offered on the international market, sales may occur for more than US$1,000. The illustrations presented as tipped-in plates with this set of Greeting Cards Frontispiece Good King Wenceslas (Carol) Good King Wenceslas (Score) Good King Wenceslas Good King Wenceslas look out On the Feast of Stephen When a poor man came in sight Gathering winter fuel Hither, Page, and stand by me, If thou knowest it telling, Yonder Peasant, who is he, Where and what his dwelling? Sire, he lives a good league hence, Underneath the Mountain; Right against the forest fence By Saint Agnes' Fountain These wonderful images are presented on the Greeting Cards as tipped-in plates - in homage to the wonderfully hand-crafted approach typical of prestige illustrated publications produced in the early decades of the 20th Century. Using pristine 1st Edition plates held in the Collection as a reference, the images are captured and reproduced through a technique that ensures the colour, line and form of the illustrations originally prepared by King are shown to dazzling effect (it is the same technique utilised for the larger reproduction prints we offer). Hand-finishing is used to replicate the visual appearance of a tipped-in plate and the images are presented on Ivory card stock with an accompanying envelope. On the right, we show an example of how these Greeting Cards are presented - using an image appearing in the 1st Edition suite of illustrations by Arthur Rackham for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. The art of Jessie M King Jessie M King (1875-1949) was a Scottish painter and book illustrator who brought influences arising from the Glasgow School of Arts to both the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements - she has been referred to as the foremost Scottish book designer and illustrator of the 20th Century. She is considered among the artists contributing to what has been termed the Golden Age of Fantasy Illustration. Among her contemporaries - on either side of the Atlantic - were artists including Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Kay Nielsen, Warwick Goble, Willy Pogány, Maxfield Parrish, Harry Clarke and Virginia Sterrett (in Sterret's case, she has been termed 'the female Kay Nielsen'). King gained a number of awards for her work while still a student at the Glasgow School of Arts and in 1902, her binding for L'Evangile de L'Enfance took the Gold Medal at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative Art held in Turin.
