Today Talavera is found throughout the country but the main cities where it is manufactured are Puebla and Dolores Hidalgo. Talavera making is a long and laborious process undertaken by skillful Mexican artisans. The first step is to obtain the appropriate clay to be transformed into a desired form. The clay used for my pieces is obtained from the countryside hills mines nearby Dolores Hidalgo. Once the clay is obtained it is grinned and placed in containers or pietas, to be soaked in water. It's left here for several days until it acquires the consistency to be kneaded by hand or feet. A lump of clay is transformed into a desired shape manually on a potters wheel or with a mold and then left to dry for several days or weeks depending on its size. Then they are taken out to dry under the sunlight. After that they get fired in wood kilns and then they will be fired at least once more in a gas kiln at 700 C before they are handpainted with lead free paints and then glazed. Finally, the pieces are fired again , at temperatures of appr. 1000 C. Brilliance and final coloration are determined by the temperature and kiln time. This set is a 1st quality, not a second as they called when there are some minor defects, but this piece is 1st quality.  If you bid and win you will be helping this wonderful people south mexico to keep their passion for the arts and this unique process of talavera.
