Description
This is a vintage Toas-Tites sandwich maker. These were manufactured in the '40s and '50s. Great for making grilled cheeses, little apple pies, s'mores, etc.--I've even heard of people grilling hamburgers or cooking eggs with them. You fit two pieces of bread or pita inside the cups along with whatever filling you like (e.g., the cheese, little bits of bacon, onion, tomato...), and put it on the stove-top burner or campfire. The metal cups seal shut, causing the bread to meld together around the filling to create a hot pocket. Flip once. It's ready in just three or four minutes. The rings inside the cups also toast a "flying saucer" shape imprint into the bread, which was one of the fun parts as a kid. Incredibly easy to clean. The wooden handles keep things cool and easy to handle, and there is a wire bale on the end that keeps the Toas-Tite from falling open. Total length is about 15.5 inches; the cups have a 4.5 inch diameter. The material is burnished aluminum, with wooden painted handles. It weighs approximately a pound. This Toas-Tite is in excellent condition. It has a little bit of surface discoloration in spots and in one of the cups, as you can see in the pictures. Nothing that's going to affect your sandwich making! The handles are in black and are affixed tightly to the handle posts. The handle clip bale fits snugly over the handles. The hinge operates flawlessly. The patina of the handle rods is quite handsome--often Toas-Tites that have not been cared for properly end up with darkened or even rusty handles, but not this one. The face of the iron reads "Reg. U.S. Pat. Off.  / TOAS-TITE / Pat. No. 2463439." The Toas-Tite will come with a copy of the instructions.I'm a collector of these; I'm unloading the duplicates of ones I already have in my collection. You'll see that I have several Toas-Tites and other sandwich irons up for auction.
