The porcelain "picture" portion of the light measures 5½" across and with the bronze tone stand it is 7" high. The cord has an inline on/off switch and takes 25w bulb. Would make a wonderful mantel or end table accent light. It would also work very well as a nightlight. LithophanesFirst invented in France in 1827, a lithophane is a porcelain engraving that virtually comes alive when illuminated from behind! The image is created by a panel of different thicknesses of translucent, kiln-fired porcelain. These illuminated artworks are so detailed, that they are sometimes mistaken for photographs. The design is carved in wax and then a plaster mold is made from the master mold and porcelain is pressed inside. When the porcelain has dried it is removed from the mold, finished by hand and then fired to 2300 degrees. This high temperature makes the porcelain viterous & translucent.
