Description
The classic film THE VERDICT, tells the story of Frank Galvin a down-on-his luck lawyer, reduced to drinking and ambulance chasing. Former associate Mickey Morrissey reminds him of his obligations in a medical malpractice suit that he himself served to Galvin on a silver platter: all parties willing to settle out of court. Blundering his way through the preliminaries, he suddenly realizes that perhaps after all the case should go to court: to punish the guilty, to get a decent settlement for his clients, and to restore his standing as a lawyer. Robert Redford was originally involved with this film. After writer David Mamet delivered his draft, Redford was uncomfortable with the main character and hired another writer to do another draft, and so on until Redford decided he didn't want to do the film. He was uncomfortable because he did not want to play an alcoholic. Sidney Lumet was offered the project. He read all the drafts and identified the original Mamet version as the one to make. At that point, Paul Newman agreed to star. This Desk was used in Paul Newman;s office set. Following the filming it became the property of the production manager, Joe Caracciolo. After years of use it became the property of the present owner. It was built by the company, Stow Davis a furniture manufacturer from Grand Rapids Michigan, the furniture capitol of the world around the the turn of the century. It got it's begining in 1885 and at the date of my resource's printing, was still in business thru at least 1998. In the begining they were mainly know for tables, whether they were for office or home use(kitchen, and dining tables to boardroom tables, which were their specialty for over a century). Over time they went more to office furniture. The Stow Davis name and number is stamped into the wood, it appears this desk is from a period stretching from 1914-1937. The desk is 69" x 38" the corner pattern is a rose pattern with fluted legs. The desk has 8 drawers and does not include the photographed glass top. This desk is located in NYC and will not be shipped. Additional photos are available upon request. This is a rare motion picture item from a great movie with a outstanding cast. We are selling this in memory and tribute to Mr. Newman and includes a copy of the script from the film. See Paul Newman sitting on this desk in the trailer below
